Part 'Amazing Race', part Scavenger Hunt, part Live Action Role Play.
Inspired by the classic computer game "Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego?"
ABOUT CARMEN SANDIEGO
"
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" began as a popular educational puzzle/adventure computer game in the early 1980s in which players chased crooks and thieves through cities,
across countries and eventually across history to retrieve famous treasures they had stolen. This game is now so fondly remembered by a generation of players that it inspired the creation
of this live-action, city-wide game.

TEAMS
1 - 5 players
TEAM CAPTAIN
Nominate a person on your team to be Team Captain. This person will be responsible for registering your team and making sure the $10 game fee is paid,
organising their team players to arrive at the State Library at 11:40am, and making sure all necessary equipment is brought on the day.
REGISTRATION
$10 entry per team. Please help our Mission Control Squad by bringing exact change.
Player Registration (above) is like RSVPing to a party - it enables the organisers to mkae sure they have enough game items for you on the day.
Please complete the Player Registration Form as soon as you can!
Full Team Registration is done on the game day at the State Library. This will involve confirming the names of each player on your team and their contact
phone numbers, and paying the $10 cash for your team's entry. Registration also functions to make gameplay more fair and equal by preventing cheating,
as unregistered players will be unable proceed through the game and all players will be unable to skip over clues.
MARSHALLING AREA
State Library entrance steps, Swanston St and Latrobe, Melbourne CBD
ARRIVAL TIME
11:40am - Sunday 29 August 2010.
Please
don't be late as every team must
complete their full registration and pay their $10 rego BEFORE midday.
GAME START TIME
12 Midday.
A speech of all the game rules, playing arena boundaries and playing instructions will be given at the State Library entrance steps at
Midday by The Chief of the ACME Detective Agency.
Please ensure that all your team members are present to hear the rules.
WHAT TO BRING
- Good shoes for dashing about the city
- A detailed map of the city
- Umbrella if there's a chance of rain
- Pencil and paper for making notes
- Mobile phones, fully charged with credit
- A full stomach
- Water bottle
- A small bag to carry game items
- $10 note to register your team
- Your buddies!
Players are encouraged to dress as detectives, crooks,
gangsters or in film noir period costume. Any themed costumes are cool, though!
Teams who dress in a similar style or colour may also find it easier to find each other
if they get separated in crowds or across intersections in the city.
Costumes are not mandatory, you will be very welcome if you're dressed in your 'undercover cop' regular clothes.
Good running shoes are recommended!
TBA
There will be an after party gathering where players can hang out and swap stories of
their adventures. Prizes will be awarded here, and teams can get photos with Carmen Sandiego and other players.
The After Party location will be announced on the day.
Do you want like twirling your moustache in a sinister fashion?
Do you like wearing trenchcoats and lurking in dark alleys?
Do you like being the boss at a crime scene investigation?
Do you enjoy giving teams of exasperated rookie detectives cryptic clues
as they race across the city trying to track down criminal masterminds?
Then volunteer as a Carmen Sandiego Game - Non Player Character!
10 - 15 Non-Player Characters are needed to run this game and make it a success. NPCs will meet at 11am at a secret
location and will be given secret instructions on the day. Crooks and Detective characters are needed.
Some costumes can be provided, or you can bring your own. NPCs can work in pairs or solo.
Shifts will be 11 - 4pm, Sunday August 29.
Most shifts will end earlier than this once all players have passed your location.
Open to those who enjoy acting as well as those who enjoy just lurking!
HERE'S THE BEEF:
No acting experience required
Must be 100% reliable
Must have a mobile phone with plenty of call credit to use on the day
Must be willing to stay outside for up to four hours, even if raining
Must support the spirit of the game by encouraging fair play
Must be confident in manning your checkpoint alone as needed
HOW TO JOIN UP:
Email Stefasaurus Productions with "NPC Volunteer" in the header,
or use the form above and put "NPC Volunteer" in the Team Name field.
You will be contacted with further information about being an NPC, and a meet-up
between you and Mission Control will be arranged to discuss you character and tasks in the game.
_________________________________________________________________________
How many players per team? 1-5
My group is a team is a team of 6. Is that ok? Yes, but the more players you have the harder it may be to divide the prize!
Can we dress up as anything we like? Please do!
Can children play? Yes, but please be aware that there are many traffic hazards throughout this game, such as crossing busy city intersections. Children can play if they have their parents or guardians with them.
Can I bring my dog? Yes, but it will prevent you from entering some of the buildings where there are clues.
What happens if a player on my team is late? They can join you on route during the game. Your Team Captain must have registered your team at the State Library and picked up the game items and been present for the Sergeant's speech.
What happens if my entire team is late? You can still play but you must still start from the State Library, where you will register your team and collect your game items.
A few members of the ACME Detective Agency Mission Control will wait until 12:30pm at the State Library for any late-comers. If your team misses out on registration they will be unable to play the game.
What if one of my team members has to leave during the game? You must call Headquarters and notify them of a member departure immediately. Players who are wandering about the city independant
of their team may be considered to be cheating and inadvertantly disqualify their team.
What forms of transport can I use? PERMITTED: Train, tram, bus.
NOT PERMITTED: Scooters, skateboards, motorbikes, bicycles and any other forms of personal transport.
This is designed to be a foot race, with public transport.
There is no advantage in having a car as you will lose precious time trying to find parking, or being stuck in traffic.
We recommend getting a DAILY METCARD.
I don't know the city very well. Will I be disadvantaged? If you bring a detailed street map and are willing to ask people on the street for help you will be ok.
Can I use the info booths? Yes. A good detective uses any information resource they can find.
Can I bribe the Non-Player Characters for information? Sadly, no. They will not be able to tell you any more than they are instructed to.
How can I join the Game team as a Non-Player Character?
Email lilithiasama@gmail.com with "NPC Volunteer" in the header and let us know what type of character you would like to play.
Why is there a registration fee? The volunteer team who design, produce and run this game donate not only their time and
effort but also their own savings to make this event happen. This money is used to buy all the prizes that will be
given out, the various player game items and equipment, and to cover all the administration and production costs. There are no sponsors involved or any sources of income for this event.
The team rego fee helps to offset some of the costs of this production so that the volunteers aren't left entirely out of pocket. The game is wholely a non-profit venture.
What's the difference between Player Registration on this website and Full Team Registration on the day? Player registration (above) is like RSVPing to a party - it enables
the organisers to make sure they have enough game items ready for you on the day. If you don't pre-register for the game it makes things tricky, but you will still be allowed to play.
All Teams MUST complete full registration on the day in order to be recognised as players. A team that tries to play or win the game who is not registered will be unable to do so. These measures will make gameplay more fair
for everyone as players will be unable to skip to the end.
What happens when the first team has won the game? All other teams will still be able to play up until 4pm. All teams will be notified by SMS when the third team has 'crossed the finish line'.
What happens if my team gets really stuck on a clue? All teams will have a 'life line' help phone call back to Mission Control. Details of how this works will be given by The Chief at the
State Library Marshalling Area on the day.
If we don't finish the game, can we still go to the After Party? Absolutely. Details will be SMSed to all teams at the end of the game play period, around 4pm.
